Burning smell, smoke or scorching
At the DB board, a socket, a switch or an appliance point. Heat at a connection is how electrical fires start.
Sparking, arcing or buzzing
Visible sparks or a crackling, buzzing sound from the board or a fitting.
A shock from a tap, geyser or appliance
The earthing has failed and something is live that should not be. Do not touch it again.
Exposed or damaged live wiring
Cables cut by contractors, storm-damaged overhead lines, sockets pulled off the wall, chewed cable in the roof.

Before We Arrive
What to do in the first five minutes
- Switch off the main switch at the DB if there is any burning, sparking or shock — if the board itself is smoking, leave the building instead.
- Keep people and pets away from the affected area and any metal connected to it.
- Never use water on an electrical fire. If a fire has started, get out and call emergency services first.
- Unplug appliances on the affected circuit if you can do so safely — a faulty kettle, heater or geyser element is often behind repeated tripping.
- Call us and describe what you see, smell and have switched off. That tells us what to bring.
Once on site, our first job is to make it safe: isolate the fault, secure exposed wiring, and restore power to the circuits that are safe to run. Many after-hours calls trace back to an ageing board that has been warning its owners for months — if that sounds familiar, a DB board upgrade is the cheapest emergency you will ever have.

Do you really answer 24 hours a day?
Yes. The emergency line — 073 087 5986 — is answered by our electricians day and night, including weekends and public holidays. If you reach voicemail during an unusually busy period, leave a message and we call back as soon as we are off the current job.
How quickly can you get to me?
We are based on the East Rand, so most emergency call-outs in Boksburg, Benoni, Kempton Park, Germiston, Bedfordview and Alberton are reached quickly; Sandton takes a little longer. We give you a realistic arrival time on the phone rather than a promise we cannot keep.
What does an emergency call-out cost?
After-hours work carries a call-out fee, which we confirm with you on the phone before we leave. If what you describe can safely wait until the morning, we will tell you so and book a normal-hours visit that costs less.
What should I do while I wait?
If there is any sign of burning, sparking or shock, switch off the main switch at the DB if it is safe to reach. Keep people away from the area, do not use water on anything electrical, and unplug appliances on the affected circuit if you safely can.
My earth leakage keeps tripping. Is that an emergency?
If it trips and resets and the property has power, it can usually wait for a normal-hours visit. If it will not reset at all, or trips together with a burning smell or shock, treat it as an emergency. Never bypass or remove the earth-leakage unit — it is your shock protection.
Will the emergency repair be done properly, or just patched?
We make the installation safe and restore the circuits that can safely run. If the permanent repair needs parts or daylight, we tell you so and return to complete it to SANS 10142. Emergency work is not exempt from the standard.
The whole street is off. Should I call you?
No — that is a municipal outage and should be reported to the municipality. An electrician cannot restore a supply that has failed upstream of your meter. If your neighbours have power and you do not, then call us.
